(Figure 1) This image shows the different uses of cotton as well as the number of each product that can be made from one bale of cotton.
Cotton is
an important plant but more than that, it is an important fiber that humans
depend on for a source of clothing. As a matter of fact – cotton fabric accounts
for approximately half of the fabric worn all across the world. In comparison
to other fabrics, cotton is exemplary and the most considered fabric to produce
cloth; its fibers easily fix itself with one another and can also be dyed without
any struggle. These cotton fabrics provide individuals with comfortable and
durable wear and are usually classified as industrial or domestic depending on
its use. Materials made from this fabric must be taken care of to prevent early
destruction, for example – excess washing can cause easy shrinkage. Cotton, on
the other hand, is not only used to make clothing as everyone assumes its is.
Different parts of the cotton plant are used in different ways. The lint fibers
are used to make products from cotton fabric such as clothing, towels, and
blankets. The cottonseed is used to make soap, margarine and salad dressing.
The linters are used to make paper, plastics and insulation. Cotton indeed
plays a significant role in our daily lives even though we do not realize it. The widely
used species of cotton is called
hirsutum. 80 countries produce 44 metric tons of cotton each year and it is all being
used towards our daily needs!
